It’s a character tic, but it’s nice to think that Jackson is signaling that he’s hip to the absurdity. He plays Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass, one of those dastardly masterminds with a tragic past and psychotic ambitions who in another era would be twirling a mustache. This being the Age of Comic Books, he instead can be seen furiously hacking a security system of a mental institution with nitwit guards, color-coordinated art direction and a couple of world-class adversaries in neighboring cells. The British director, 50, is known for gritty thrillers featuring robberies, explosions, and car chases, such as  Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels  and  Snatch . But switch a car for a magic carpet, replace stolen money with a stolen lamp, throw in an underdog hero, and you can start to see why Ritchie felt reconceiving  Aladdin  for live-action might be in his wheelhouse when the studio approached him in 2016. “My skills and experience could add enough to make it feel fresh and worth it, but not so much so that it would wash away nostalgia,” Ritchie tells EW. The Lego Movie  took the much-loved plastic childhood toy and built a whip-smart, meta-comedy that played equally well for kids and adults. Already spawning a direct spin-off, 2017’s  The Lego Batman Movie  , now comes the sequel,  The Lego Movie 2 , which is fast and funny, if not exactly fresh. Alita: could this project be Hollywood’s breakthrough manga movie? Scripted by the first film’s makers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but directed by  Trolls  ’ Mike Mitchell, the transition looks fairly seamless, with the vibrant animation again by Animal Logic. In truth, this film doesn’t stray too far from the original, picking up briefly where its predecessor ended, when the Duplo toys arrived to cause havoc.
